10 questions with Caylie:
Which writer(s) inspire you? Sir Walter Murdoch, Nicki Gemmell, Rebecca Sparrow.
What draws you to writing for children specifically? I have small children who both adore books, and it’s such quality time, so I started wanting to write stories for my children. “We want to hear a story out of your mouth, Mummy!” But I quickly realised that my ability did not lie with the littlies and so I’m trying my hand at YA this year.
What are your writing goals? To self-publish my first book by May 2014, to complete my YA novel by the end of 2015, to have that novel published either traditionally or under my own publishing house, Mindful Matter Publications.
Are there any other creative projects you are working on you would like to share? My washing pile is looking a little like a Pro Hart painting right now, and I think whatever comes out of the washing machine might be quite colourful with mould... But other than that, just trying to finalise the publishing of Bedtime Stories for Busy Mothers and learning everything I can about self-marketing and authentic promotion.
Was there a particular book in your childhood that had a big influence on you? Little Women series, Little House on the Prairie Series, Narnia Series and anything by Enid Blyton. Favourite book was ‘Mandy’ by Julie Andrews Edwards
Is there a particular theme or underlying subjects that runs through your writing? Authenticity, reality, courage to be natural and true to oneself and others
What does your ideal Sunday look like? If I had no children, then lazing about in a bookshop with an unlimited amount of money to buy books. As I can’t really do that, it’s hanging with the kids and other friends and family, catching up, eating good food and drinking wine.
Who/ what inspires you? All people who are self-motivated inspire me. I am a TED addict and when I feel a little low (which is rarely, since I’ve started writing) I watch inspirational videos with real people talking about real solutions to issues we all suffer from.
Have you got any inspirational writing quotes you would like to share? All my favourite quotes come from the book Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon:
“Don’t wait until you know who you are to get started”
“Write the book you want to read”
“Do good work and share it with people”
And another of unknown origin
“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind, always.”
If you could meet/invite any 3 children’s writer/illustrator who would they be? Mem Fox (again), Enid Blyton (yes, I know, that’s stretching it a bit) and Andy Griffiths/Terry Denton (what a pair!)
